Visit Mystras
Nestled in the heart of the Peloponnese peninsula, Mystras stands as a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of Greece. Its story begins in the 13th century when the Frankish ruler William II of Villehardouin founded a fortress atop the steep slopes of Mount Taygetos. This fortress, known as Mystras, served as a strategic stronghold during the tumultuous years of the Frankish occupation.
In the early 14th century, Mystras underwent a transformation under the rule of the Byzantine Emperor Andronikos II Palaiologos. He fortified the city and made it the capital of the Byzantine Despotate of the Morea, a region encompassing much of the southern Peloponnese. Mystras flourished as a center of Byzantine culture, art, and learning during this time, attracting scholars, artists, and theologians from across the Byzantine Empire.
The 15th century saw Mystras reach its zenith under the rule of the last Byzantine emperor, Constantine XI Palaiologos. It became a beacon of Byzantine civilization, boasting magnificent palaces, churches adorned with breathtaking frescoes, and a vibrant urban life. However, this golden age was short-lived.
In 1460, the Ottoman Turks, led by Mehmed II, conquered the Peloponnese, including Mystras. Despite a valiant defense, the city fell, and the Byzantine Empire came to an end. Mystras became a provincial capital under Ottoman rule, but its glory days were behind it.
Over the centuries, Mystras gradually declined, its once-grand buildings falling into ruin. However, its rich history and architectural wonders continued to captivate visitors and scholars alike. In the 20th century, efforts were made to preserve and restore the site, and today, Mystras is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering visitors a glimpse into the splendor of its Byzantine past.
From its humble beginnings as a fortress to its glorious days as a Byzantine capital, Mystras remains a symbol of resilience and cultural heritage, a testament to the enduring legacy of Greece’s storied past.
