The archaeological site is near the village Mykines in Argolis, in north-eastern Peloponnese, Greece. The distance from Athens airport to Mycenae is almost 140km and the drive to get there is 1hour and 30 minutes.
Mycenae, were first inhibited in the Neolithic age, at about 7000 B.C. but not important artifacts were found until 1700 BC . According to the legend, Perseus , son of Zeus, built Mycenae with the help of the Cyclops. His family ruled Mycenae for three generations. The last of them, Eurystheas, died in a battle without leaving any successor . Then, Atreus, the son of Pelops, father of Agamemnon and Menelaus, was chosen to be the next king.
After Atreus death, Agamemnon became the king of Mycenae and Menelaus became the king of Sparta. King Agamemnon was the leader of the Achaeans (Greeks) in the Trojan War. The war that started when Paris, the son of king of Troy, Priamos, seduced Helen, the wife of Menelaus, with the help of goddess Aphrodite.

The citadel of Mycenae is built on a lower hill, between two hills, Profitis Ilias (805m) and Mount Sara(660m). The archaeological site that we see today was build around 1350 BC. It was fortified with Cyclopean Walls and its main entrance “The Lions Gate “ has sculptures of two lions facing each other, a symbol of power and dominance. Outside of the walls was a residential area and 9 dome shaped tombs were found, including the most famous tomb “the Treasury of Atreus”
Today, the archaeological site of Mycenae is a Unesco World Heritage List member. The site is one of the 5 most popular historical destinations in Greece. The site is open year-round year-round, from 8: oo am to 17:00 in the winter, and 8:00 to 20:30 from May to August . The ticket to enter the site costs 12 euros .
