Spetses today is a small cosmopolitan island with a history of 8.000 years of settlements since the Middle Stone Age. In the 1st century BC the name of the island was Pitiousa and later at the 15th century the venetians named the island Spezia . The people of the island played a very important role at the Greek Revolution of Independence, especially the First Female Admiral of the Revolution Laskarina Bouboulina who gave all her ships and wealth for the Freedom of Greece.
